Find Unity Within

Where there is unity, there is always victory. - Publilius Syrus

Unity is a timeless concept that has been discussed across the world. Publilius Syrus, a Latin writer famed for his Sententiae, or brief moral sayings, succinctly captures the essence here - Ubi concordia, ibi semper victoria or Where there is unity, there is always victory. Time and time again, we have witnessed or experienced the power in unity. From the freedom movements of the 1900s in India to the viral social media analogy of the ease of snapping a raw single spaghetti strand versus a bundle, the strength found in unity is unmistakable. However, while unity is often emphasized as a trait to be practiced with others, true unity begins within oneself.

Unity Within

Unity is not merely a collaborative event. The first step towards achieving unity is to find it within. The three main attributes that need to be in sync for a harmonious and purposeful existence are thoughts, feelings and actions. A deep sense of unity between these three leads to consistent and unified actions that bring peace and success.

  1. Thoughts: The word thought comes from old English þoht, geþoht that means "product of mental activity,". Thoughts are best described as cognitive process that can happen consciously or unconsciously and independent of stimulus. Perhaps the easiest to form, thoughts are shaped by many factors including genetics, education, circumstances etc, but can be consciously controlled. For any action to ever occur, it needs to have its roots at the thoughts.

  2. Feelings: Feelings are conscious experiences that might be stemmed from emotional or physical stimulus. Thoughts lead to generation of feelings and hence when feelings are in sync with thoughts, it leads to fuelled determination.

  3. Actions: The tangible output from congruence of thoughts and feelings are the actions. Way down in the funnel, not all thoughts turn to action and actions not in sync with thoughts seldom see success.

When these elements are well aligned, you create a powerful force within yourself that enhances personal well-being and strengthens the unity within and in-turn in the community.

To being the process of creating unity within, start with the basics, self-reflection with the help of meditation and mindfulness. Once you have reached a calm mental state, it is easier to have better control over the thoughts and feelings which in turn helps align the two for purposeful action. As Syrus reminds us, victory, be personal or collective, stems from a true sense of unity. Once we find unity within ourselves, we create a harmony that is conducive towards victory.
